As agile software development, DevOps and microservices adoption becomes mainstream for organizations aiming for greater speed, there is a need to reposition Enterprise Architecture (EA) Management practices to support agility and transformation. In order to sustain competitive advantage, organisations need to utilise innovative digital technologies, artificial intelligence and analytics. At the same time the increasing economic, societal and environmental uncertainties demand both resilience and agility. Thus, to deliver new business and service models underpinned by digital technology, established architectures need to be redesigned and new architectural patterns established.
Clear planning, roadmaps and coordination demand an architectural approach that balance resilience and agility. Organisations will reposition Enterprise Architecture as one of the key drivers for digital transformation. This is particularly true when working across multiple sites that require shared knowledge. These problems can be ameliorated by the careful design of correct software and interoperability architectures and their associated task dependencies. Such modern architectures ultimately must fulfil the functional requirements to produce a quality product, and tackling organizational constraints is of prime importance to lead to successful outcomes.
Forming a focused research initiative
With this workshop we look towards 2025 on the intersection between EA and digital transformation. We will discuss, shape and redefine the practice of EA within enterprises and discuss modern software architectural patterns to support digital transformation. We will analyse and discuss possible scenarios, options and challenges in order to shape a vision of how enterprise architectures should be created in the future. It will bring together a small group of experts and leaders that will first contemplate the problems and constraints to creating such modern enterprise and software architectures followed by the elaboration of strategies and action tasks that will foment improvements in the effectiveness of enterprise architectural practices. Driven by the challenges of continuous disruption and realignment, we aim to develop a roadmap to position EA between agility and resilience within an enterprise. Topics for discussion include:

The Innovation Value Institute (IVI) is a multidisciplinary research and education institute co-founded in 2006 by Maynooth University and Intel Corporation with the support of the Irish Government.

Computers have become a part of everybody’s daily life, and in the Department of Computer Science we teach how computer systems work, with a particular focus on software, and we research into how computer systems will develop into the future. Our approach is to instill a thorough understanding of fundamental principles, while developing analytical abilities and practical skills.
